- 2.The Old City temples — The walled old town holds dozens of beautiful temples — chief among them Wat Chedi Luang, its massive, half-ruined 14th-century pagoda, and the graceful golden Wat Phra Singh. Wander between them barefoot, watch monks going about their day, and soak up the serene Lanna architecture of carved teak and gilded stucco. The soul of Chiang Mai, all within a walk.
- 3.Sunday Walking Street — Every Sunday evening the Old City's main street closes to traffic and becomes a wonderful mile-long market — handicrafts, art, clothes and souvenirs from northern artisans, live music, and a glorious spread of street food in the temple courtyards. Relaxed, atmospheric and the best market in town; come hungry and browse for hours. (Saturday has its own on Wualai Road.)
- 13.Monk chat & meditation — Several temples run 'monk chat' sessions where young monks practise their English by talking with visitors about Buddhism and daily monastic life — a warm, fascinating and free cultural exchange. Some, like Wat Suan Dok, also offer beginner meditation retreats. A gentle, genuine way to connect with the spiritual heart of the city; go with respect and curiosity.
- 14.City Arts & Culture Centre — A well-done museum in a graceful colonial building on the Three Kings Monument square, telling the story of Chiang Mai and the Lanna kingdom through models, film and artefacts. A cool, air-conditioned hour that gives real context to the temples and history all around; combine it with the adjoining history and folk-life museums on the same square.
- 15.The old walls & moat — The Old City is still framed by its square moat and the restored brick gates and corner bastions of the ancient Lanna walls — the photogenic Tha Phae Gate is the classic spot, alive with pigeons, cyclists and evening crowds. Rent a bike or just stroll the moat, hop between temples, and feel the shape of the 700-year-old city. A gentle, orienting wander.
